Gugulethu is historically the second township to be built in Cape Town. It was established and built through the recommendation of the black residents of Cape Town who felt cramped where they were housed, which was in Kwa-Langa, the first township in the city and province. Gugulethu means our pride and was established to restore the South Africans’ peoples’ pride.
For Tees & Gees, Gugulethu signifies the beginning or birthplace of this brand. Tees & Gees was started in the dusty street corner of Gugulethu in NY115. This print has been translated into other areas such as Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and recently Cape Town – as The Mother City. This print just like Kas’lam has the potential to be translated or changed into anyplace from any province. It is one of the reason TEES & GEES is the fastest growing t-shirt brand in Africa today.
